Overview

Limpopo has three airports in two district municipalities that offer scheduled flights and hence a deterministic means of air cargo transportation. Polokwane International airport located within Capricorn district offers scheduled dialy flights to OR Tambo through AIRLINK. Phalaborwa (Kruger Park Gateway) airport located within Mopani district also offers daily scheduled flights to Johannesburg through AIRLINK and Hoedspruit (Eastgate) airport (also located within Mopani district) offers scheduled daily flights to Johannesburg and Capetown through SA EXPRESS. Although there are airfields distributed throughout the province air transportation to most parts of the province remain a challenge, majority of the airfields are operated by general aviation community offering mainly chartered flights and flying lessons. The exception in this regard is Lephalale airport which although is unlicensed and unmanned offers daily flights to Johannesburg mainly due to demand arising from industrial users. A map of the major airfields within the province is shown in below.

As it can be seen from the map above, air transportation to the north and west of Polokwane is highly limited.
