•Government has noted with concern a circulating video of the victims who are seen to be allegedly assaulted by members of the VIP Protection Services.
• While the investigation into the conduct of the members is underway, government strongly condemns such behaviour as it does not align with the values and code of conduct of the South African Police Service (SAPS).
• The role of the police is to, among other things, prevent, combat, and investigate crime, maintain public order, protect and secure the inhabitants of South Africa, and uphold and enforce the law.
• The vast majority of law enforcement officers perform their very difficult jobs with respect for their communities and in compliance with the law. However, if you see something, you must SPEAK UP!
• For any police misconduct, members of the public can open a case at their nearest police station.
• If the police fail to assist, the public is encouraged to lodge a complaint with the
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for an investigation.
• Find out more about lodging a complaint by visiting: https://www.ipid.gov.za/node/4 or contact the IPID on 012 399 0000
